Detroit Lions

Green Bay Packers

The Green Bay Packers are the NFL’s third-oldest franchise, first entering the league in 1921. Minnesota Vikings

• Last NFC North Division Title: 2022

The Minnesota Vikings joined the NFL as an expansion team in 1961 and quickly developed into one of the league’s most competitive franchises. Less than two decades removed from their inception, Minnesota appeared in four Super Bowls from 1969-1976, mostly led by QB Fran Tarkenton and their legendary defensive line dubbed the “Purple People Eaters”. Unfortunately for Vikings fans, all four appearances resulted in a loss and they haven’t returned to football’s biggest stage ever since.

Following the 2002 divisional realignment, Minnesota has captured five NFC North crowns, most recently in 2022 when they finished 13-4. Despite the regular season success, the Vikings’ playoff shortcomings have continued – the 2022 squad was ousted in the Wild Card Round by Daniel Jones and a sneaky underdog New York Giants team. They managed to rebound with another strong season in 2023 but fell short of overtaking Detroit in the North.

Looking ahead to 2025, the Vikings will heavily lean on WR Justin Jefferson, one of the NFL’s most unstoppable offensive weapons, and second-year quarterback J.J. McCarthy, the heir apparent under center. Backed by a talented core that includes RB Aaron Jones, WR Jordan Addison and TE T.J. Hockenson, Minnesota has all the tools to contest for another NFC North title.

Despite this, there appears to be some positive momentum brewing for the Dirty Birds: first-year HC Raheem Morris led the team to its highest win total (8) since 2017 during his debut campaign last season.

Morris will now hand the keys off to second-year QB Michael Penix Jr., who will look to take a major leap in his sophomore season with the help of Bijan Robinson, Drake London and Kyle Pitts. If everything pans out, Atlanta just might find itself in position to challenge Tampa Bay for the NFC South crown in 2025.

Carolina Panthers: New beginnings?

• Last NFC South Division Title: 2015

The Carolina Panthers are one of the NFL’s youngest franchises, first entering the mix in 1995. Similar to Atlanta, Carolina spent its first seven seasons as a member of the NFC West before moving over to the newly-founded NFC South in 2002.

Despite being a member of the NFL for just 30 seasons thus far, the Panthers have experienced their fair share of success over the years. The franchise has six division titles to its name to go along with a pair of NFC Championship victories in 2003 and 2015. Unfortunately for Panthers fans, both of those seasons ended with a narrow loss in the Super Bowl.

Looking ahead to 2025, all eyes will surely be on second-year HC Dave Canales and his young quarterback Bryce Young. After an abysmal 1-7 start to the 2024 season, Canales and Young rallied the team to a 5-12 finish, notching a 4-5 record over their final nine games. It remains to be seen if the 2025 Panthers will manage to finish above .500 for the first time since 2017, but one thing is for certain: the foundation is there.

New Orleans Saints: Return of the Aints

The New Orleans Saints are the second-oldest team in the NFC South, just behind the Falcons. The franchise’s inaugural season occurred in 1967 and it ended up taking a mind-boggling 20 years until they finished with a record above .500 (12-3 in 1987).

Brady instantly made an impact in Tampa Bay, uplifting the franchise to a Super Bowl LV victory during his first season in 2020.

And despite retiring after just three seasons in Tampa Bay, Brady clearly made his mark on the franchise. The Buccaneers are currently enjoying a stretch of four consecutive NFC South titles, two of which have occurred in the post-Brady era led by Baker Mayfield. Since that run by the Panthers and a one-off title by the Falcons in 2016, the NFC South has experienced nothing but back-to-back winners. In fact, the division has been won by either the Saints or Buccaneers in each of the last eight seasons.

• 2024 Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Despite locking up the division in each of the previous two seasons, Tampa Bay hadn’t won double-digit games in the regular season since 2021. That changed in 2024, as Baker Mayfield elevated his game to that of a Top 10 quarterback in all of football. Mayfield finished the season with a whopping 4,500 passing yards and 41 touchdowns while leading the Bucs to a 10-7 record and their fourth division title in as many seasons.
• 2023 Tampa Bay Buccaneers: In the first year of the post-Brady era, Tampa Bay caught lightning in a bottle by bringing in former No. 1 overall pick Baker Mayfield to command their offense. After a somewhat rocky start to his NFL career, Mayfield instantly found a home in Tampa Bay. He posted career highs in both passing yards and passing touchdowns en route to a 9-8 record and the team’s third consecutive NFC South title.
• 2022 Tampa Bay Buccaneers: In Tom Brady’s final NFL season, the Buccaneers underwhelmed with a mediocre 8-9 record in the regular season. Despite this, they lucked out as the rest of the division finished with identical 7-10 records. As such, Tampa Bay became just the fourth team in NFL history to win their division and clinch a playoff berth with a record under .500. They joined the 2014 Panthers as the only NFC South teams to do so.
• 2021 Tampa Bay Buccaneers: As the defending Super Bowl champions, Tampa Bay showed no signs of slowing down during the 2021 regular season. Tom Brady led the Bucs to a 13-4 record and the franchise’s first NFC South title since 2007. Tampa Bay’s quest to repeat as champs did fall short, however, as Matthew Stafford and the eventual champion Rams took them down in a classic Divisional Round matchup, 30-27.
• 2020 New Orleans Saints: 2020 was a special year for the city of New Orleans, as the Saints rumbled to a 12-4 record and a first-place finish in the NFC South. This season also marked the end of legendary franchise QB Drew Brees’ NFL career, as he would hang up his cleats following a Divisional Round loss to Tom Brady’s Buccaneers.
